EPOETIN (Paeds)
(Eprex, Erythropoetin, Epoetin alfa, EPO)

Mechanism of action:

Colony-stimulating factor. Human erythropoietin produced in cell culture using recombinant DNA technology.

Prefilled syringes, single use, preservative-free:
2,000 units
3,000 units
4,000 units

Anemia in chronic kidney disease:
Infants, Children and Adolescents  
50-150 units /kg/week SC/IV or divided 2-3 times weekly
Titrate dose to achieve target Hgb

Pre-operative use to decrease blood product exposure*
300 units/kg/week SC x 3-4 weeks   

Do not shake or transport via pneumatic tube system. Shaking may denature proteins and render the product inactive.

SC route provides sustained serum levels and longer half life compared to IV route.

IV use restricted to hemodialysis patients only.

*Consult hematology for this indication (pre-op use) at least 4 weeks prior to surgery date.
