Inhaled/nasal corticosteroid

inhaler: 50 mcg/puff, 125 mcg/puff, 250 mcg/puff
nasal spray: 50 mcg/dose (spray)
Metered Dose Inhaler (MDI):
Low dose: 50-100 mcg/dose inhaled BID
Medium dose: >100-200 mcg/dose inhaled BID
High dose: >200-500 mcg/dose inhaled BID

Nasal Spray:
>4 yrs: 1-2 sprays each nostril once daily

High dose may be associated with significant side effects - refer to asthma specialists.
100 mcg ciclesonide= 125 mcg fluticasone = 100 mcg beclomethasone dipropionate = 200 mcg budesonide.

Inhaler:

Use with valved holding chamber (e.g. Aerochamber) recommended.

Significant improvements may be seen within 4-7 days.

Side effects: dysphonia and oral thrush. Rinse mouth after inhalation.

Nasal spray:

May take up to 2 weeks of regular use before full benefit of medication is known.

May cause transient epistaxis and nasal irritation.

Taste and smell alteration also reported.
