Tazobactam is a beta lactamase inhibitor. When combined with piperacillin its spectrum of activity is expanded to include beta lactamase producing bacteria (primarily S. aureus sp) that would otherwise be resistant to piperacillin by itself Dose adjustment required in renal impairment.
