Mechanism of action:

Anticholinergic; semi-synthetic derivative of scopolamine

tablet: 10 mg
injection: 20 mg/mL
MR enterography:
0.3 mg/kg IV x 1 (repeat x 1 in 30 min).
Max dose 20 mg.

Acute spasms:
Oral:
6-12 yrs old: 10 mg/dose TID
12-18 yrs old: 20 mg/dose QID

IM/IV:
2-6 yrs old: 5 mg/dose (Max 15 mg/day)
6-12 yrs old: 5-10 mg/dose (Max 30 mg/day)
12-18 yrs old: 20 mg/dose (Max 80 mg/day)

Adults:
10-20 mg/dose PO/IM/IV/SC 3-5 times a day (Max 100 mg/day)
Antispasmodic

A semi-synthetic derivative of scopolamine, but doses are NOT equivalent (for hyoscine hydrobromide, see scopolamine monograph).

Infants and children are more susceptible than adults to the adverse effects of anticholinergics.

Anticholinergic side effects (see atropine).

Contraindicated in patients with myasthenia gravis, megacolon, tachycardia, cardiac failure, mechanical stenoses of the GI tract, paralytic ileus and narrow angle glaucoma. Caution with concurrent anticholinergic medications.

Tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water.
