Asthma Exacerbation (see Emergency Dept. protocol): Metered Dose Inhaler (MDI): 3 puffs (<20kg) or 6 puffs (>=20kg) Q20 minutes x 3 doses in first hour, then stop. Respiratory Solution: 0.25 mg (<20 kg) or 0.5 mg (>20 kg) Q20 minutes x 3 doses in first hour, then stop. |
Onset of action: within 15 minutes. Duration of effect: 2-6 hours. MDI use with valved holding chamber (e.g. Aerochamber) recommended. Respiratory solution may be mixed with salbutamol in mask prior to treatment for acute asthma. Dilute respiratory solution with NS to a total volume of 4 mL and administer via nebulizer. Inhaled anticholinergics are not recommended for long-term management of asthma in children due to lack of benefit.
