Not recommended for infants < 6 mo. Onset of action: 2 to 5 minutes. May cause hyperphosphatemia, hypernatremia, hypocalcemia, hypotension, and acidosis. Overdose may cause tetany. AVOID retention of enema as increased systemic absorption can cause severe electrolyte disturbances. This is a hypertonic solution. Patients should be well-hydrated prior to use as the enema can cause further dehydration. Contraindicated in severe renal failure, megacolon, bowel obstruction, hypertension and congestive heart failure. Standard Prescription: phosphate enema __mL PR x 1 dose {may repeat x 1 dose} |
