Mechanism of action:

Alpha-1-adrenergic receptor blocker.

tablets: 1 mg, 2 mg.

liquid (BCCH): 0.1 mg/mL.
Children:
Maintenance: 0.02-0.05 mg/kg/dose PO Q8-12H.
Maximum: 0.5 mg/kg/day or 20 mg/day

Adults:
2-20 mg/24 hr div BID-TID.
maximum 20 mg per day.
Not recommended as first-line therapy for hypertension, unless specific indication for alpha-blockade.

Orthostatic hypotension may occur after initial dose. Give first dose with patient supine and consider additional monitoring.

May cause syncope, tachycardia, hypotension, dizziness, nausea, headache, drowsiness, fatigue, anticholinergic effects.


Standard Prescription:

prazosin __mcg PO Q__H (__mcg/kg/24 hr)
