Antituberculosis agent.

capsule: 150 mg, 300 mg
oral suspension (BCCH): 20 mg/mL
Maximum single dose:  600 mg

Active Tuberculosis:
10-20 mg/kg/dose PO daily or three times weekly
Latent Tuberculosis:
15mg/kg/dose PO daily

Meningitis Prophylaxis:
H. influenza:
< 1 month old (dose not well established): 10 mg/kg/24 hr PO x 4 days.
> 1 month old: 20 mg/kg/24 hr PO x 4 days.

N. meningitidis:
< 1 month old: 10 mg/kg/24 hr PO div. Q12H x 2 days.
> 1 month old: 20 mg/kg/24 hr PO div. Q12H x 2 days.

Other Infections:
10 to 20 mg/kg/24 hr PO once daily or div. Q12H.
Maximum: 600 to 900 mg/day.

Pruritus Due to Cholestasis:
10 to 20 mg/kg/24 hr div. Q12H.
Should not be used as monotherapy except when given for prophylaxis.

Will cause orange discolouration of body fluids (urine, saliva, tears) and soft contact lenses.

Taken 1 hr before or 2 hr after meals.

Use in liver disease only under guidance. Rifampin may increase cholestasis in some patients and require concomitant use of choleretic drugs.

Rifampin induces hepatic liver enzymes (CYP450) which may lower serum levels of a number of medications. Check for drug interactions.
