SULFASALAZINE (Paeds)
(Salazopyrin, Salazopyrin-EN)

Mechanism of action:

Prodrug of 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) linked to sulfapyridine; 5-ASA compounds have anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties.

tablet: 500 mg
enteric coated tablet: 500 mg
BCCH suspension: 50mg/mL
20-35 mg/kg/dose PO BID (Max 4 g/day) Patients experiencing GI side effects with the uncoated tablets should use the enteric coated tablets, a lower dose, or a different 5-ASA preparation.

Contraindicated in patients with sulfa or salicylate allergy and severe renal or hepatic impairment.

Once daily dosing is equally effective but may result in more side effects.

Maintenance doses should be similar. Lower doses may be considered after a period of sustained remission. The minimum effective dose in adults is 1.2 g/day.

May interact with cyclosporine (decreased cyclosporine levels).
