Give doses 1 hr before meals and at bedtime on an empty stomach. Sucralfate contains aluminum, which may accumulate in patients with renal impairment. Sucralfate decreases absorption of phenytoin, digoxin, theophylline, fat-soluble vitamins, omeprazole, ketaconazole, quinolones, and oral anticoagulants. Administer these drugs at least 2 hr before or after sucralfate. Not recommended as independent treatment of severe symptoms of GERD or erosive esophagitis in children.
