TAUROLIDINE (Paeds)

Mechanism of action:

Taurolidine is an antimicrobial that is used to try to prevent infections in catheters

Injection for CVC Lock: 2% (Available through Health Canada Special Access Programme only)
CVC Lock for prevention of catheter related bloodstream infection:
Standardized Prescribed Volume:
1.5 mL (Long term CVC <10 kg, PICC ≥ 2.6 French)
2.5 mL (Other CVC lines) Do not use in PICC < 2.6 French

Usual Dwell Time: 4 to 24 hours (minimum 30 min)
Instill prescribed volume once daily when catheter not in use, allow to dwell for prescribed time, then withdraw from IV port.
Special Access Medication - Health Canada approval required prior to use.

If accidentally flushed into patient or withdrawal of lock solution is not possible, there are no anticipated adverse effects.
