A non-selective beta blocker with alpha-blocking activity. Allow 2-3 weeks between dose increments when treating CHF to avoid short term negative inotropic effects. An adjunct to diuretics and ACE inhibitors (with or without digoxin) in management of CHF. Carvedilol may cause a modest increase in serum digoxin level. Due to faster elimination in young children (<3.5 yrs) TID dosing and higher dose may be required. Poor oral biovailability 25-35% due to first pass effects.
