Standard Prescription

diazepam__mg IV/IM{PO} Q__H (__mg/kg/dose) (prn)

diazepam__mg IV
{PR} x 1 dose  (__mg/kg/dose). May repeat in 10 min prn (max 3 doses)


Dosages

Sedation or muscle relaxation:
0.04-0.2 mg/kg/dose PO Q6-8H.
Maximum: 10 mg/dose

Status Epilepticus:
0.3 mg/kg/dose IV or 0.5 mg/kg/dose PR. IV or PR dose may be repeated in 5-10 min. if required.

Maximum single IV dose:
< 5 yr: 5 mg IV
>= 5 yr: 10 mg IV

Maximum single PR dose:
20 mg PR

Mechanism of Action

Benzodiazepine. Diezepam is a positive allosteric modulator of the GABA type A receptors reducing the arousal of the cortical and limbic systems in the central nervous system

Forms Supplied

tablet: 2 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg
injection: 10 mg/2 mL amp (contains propylene glycol)

(Also available but not stocked at BCCH: Diastat 5 & 10 mg pre-loaded syringe for rectal administration.)

Comments

Injectable product may be given rectally.

IV administration rate of undiluted injection not to exceed 5 mg/min.

Adverse effects (IV): Hypotension, respiratory depression (especially following rapid IV administration).
