Standard Prescription

ethambutol__mg PO__(frequency) (__mg/kg/dose)

Dosages

Tuberculosis and Non-TB mycobacterial infections:  

15 -25 mg/kg/dose PO daily or 50 mg/kg/dose twice weekly. 
Maximum:  2.5 g/dose.

Mechanism of Action

Antimycobacterial agent. It is bacteriostatic against actively growing bacilli. It inhibits the enzyme arabinosyl transferase leading to increased permeability of the cell wall.

Forms Supplied

tablet: 100 mg, 400 mg

Comments

Adverse effects: optic neuritis (usually reversible), decreased red/green colour discrimination, GI upset and hypersensitivity.

Avoid use in children in whom visual acuity and color perception cannot be assessed.

Commonly given concurrently with rifampin or other TB drugs.
