Standard Prescription

gentamicin eye ointment: Apply to__eye(s)__(frequency)

gentamicin eye drop: Instill   drops to__eye(s) Q   H

gentamicin ear drop: Instill   drops to__ear(s) Q__H

gentamicin topical cream/ointment: Apply to affected area(s)__(frequency)

Dosages

Eye Ointment: Apply to eye(s) BID-TID.
Eye Drops: 1-2 drops to eye(s) Q4H, up to 2 drops every hour for severe infections.
Ear drops: 3-4 drops into the infected ear(s) TID. Reasses every 5-7 days for ototoxicity
Topical: Apply small amount gently to cleansed affected area TID-QID.

Aminoglycoside antibiotic

eye/ear drops: 0.3%
topical ointment: 0.1%
topical cream: 0.1%

Comments

In cases where tympanic perforation (or patent tympanostomy tube) is seen or suspected, gentamicin ear drops should be avoided or used with extreme caution because of the risk of ototoxicity.

Patients are advised not to wear soft contact lenses during ophthalmic treatment.
