Dosages
Children:
Constipation:
0.4-0.8 g/kg/dose PO daily (Max 34 g/day)
Fecal disimpaction:
1-1.5 g/kg/dose PO daily x 3-6 days (Max 100 g/day)
Doses will be standardized as per PT&N Dose Standardization Policy unless "do not round dose" is written

Mechanism of Action
Osmotic agent which draws water into the stool

Standardized dose package sizes: 5g, 8g, 12.5g, 17g (commercially available as Lax-a-day) 20g
Comments
Dissolve dose in 250 mL of water, juice or milk.
Daily doses can also be divided BID.
PEG 3350 is an osmotic laxative that increases the water content of stools.
It is minimally absorbed in the GI tract and carries no risk of electrolyte imbalances.
Onset of action: 2 to 4 days.
Most common side effects: abdominal pain, bloating, flatulence and loose stools.
For home use, volume measures may be easier; 17 grams is approximately equivalent to a heaping tablespoon, or refer to package directions.
