Standard Prescription

ibuprofen__mg PO Q__H (PRN)_____ (__mg/kg/dose)

Dosages

Children:

Analgesic/Antipyretic:
5-10 mg/kg/dose PO Q6-8H.
Maximum: 40 mg/kg/24 hr or 2400 mg/24 hr.

Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA):
10-12.5 mg/kg/dose PO div. Q6-8H (30-50 mg/kg/24 hr)
Maximum: 50 mg/kg/24 hr or 2400 mg/24 hr.

Adults:

Anti-inflammatory:
400-800 mg/dose PO Q6-8H. Maximum 3200 mg/24 hr.

Pain/Fever/Dysmenorrhea:
200-400 mg/dose PO Q4-6H PRN.
Maximum: 2400 mg/24 hr.

Mechanism of Action

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)

Tablet: 200 mg, 300 mg, 400 mg

Drops:
40 mg/mL

Comments

May increase serum levels of digoxin, methotrexate and lithium. May decrease the antiplatelet effects of ASA.

Note: concomitant use of methotrexate and NSAID is a standard of care for treating JIA.

May increase risk of acute kidney injury in patient with dehydration or concomitant use of other nephrotoxic medications (eg. vancomycin).

Health Canada Report (2015) maximum recommended daily dose for ibuprofen is 2400 mg.
