Dosages
Adolescents/Adults:
Usual Therapeutic & Maintenance Dose: 10-25 mg PO BID
Initial: 5-10 mg PO BID
Increment: Increase over 7-10 days to effective control of psychotic symptoms. Usual Therapeutic & Maintenance Dose: 10-25 mg PO BID
Usual maximum: 100 mg/24 hr
Usual IM Dose: 10-20 mg IM Q6H
Acute agitation:
0.1-0.2 mg/kg/dose PO/IM once
Maximum 25 mg/dose
0.1-0.2 mg/kg/dose PO/IM once
Maximum 25 mg/dose

Comments
Medium potency conventional antipsychotic.
High incidence of sedation, moderate effects on the cardiovascular system and a moderate incidence of anticholinergic side effects.
Moderate incidence of extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS), including dystonic reactions in children and adolescents (treat with benztropine or diphenhydramine).

15 mg loxapine PO approx. = 100 mg chlorpromazine PO or 2 mg haloperidol PO.
