Standard Prescription

minoxidil__mg PO Q__H (__mg/kg/24hr)

Dosages

Children < 12 yrs:
  • 0.1 to 0.2 mg/kg/24 hr PO div. daily to BID.
  • Start with small doses and increase by increments of 0.1 to 0.2 mg/kg/24 hr at 3 day intervals.  
  • Maximum: 50 mg/24 hr.
Children > 12 yrs & Adults:
  • Start with 5 mg/24 hr daily
  • Dose may be increased at 3 day intervals.
  • Usual effective range: 10 to 40 mg/24 hr. div. daily to BID.  
  • Maximum: 100 mg/24 hr.

Mechanism of Action

Vasodilator, Anti-hypertensive

Forms Supplied

tablet: 2.5 mg

Comments

  • Full effects are not usually seen within 3 to 7 days.
  • Effects on blood pressure may persist for up to 75 hr.
  • Contraindicated in pheochromocytoma
