allopurinol __mg PO ___(frequency) (__mg/kg/24 hr)
Dosages
10 mg/kg/dose PO once daily or 5 mg/kg/dose PO BID if dose is > 300 mg.
Maximum: 800 mg/24 hr.

Mechanism of Action
Xanthine oxidase inhibitor.

Comments
Decrease dose in renal impairment.
Allopurinol is metabolized to an active metabolite with a long half-life (18 hr).
Allopurinol is the preferred agent in patients with low risk or intermediate of tumor lysis syndrome.
Onset of action ( i.e. decrease in uric acid levels) is 24-48 hours.
It is not necessary to give allopurinol while treating with rasburicase.
