Dosages
Children:
Initial: 5 to 7 mg/kg/24 hr PO div. Q8H
Maintenance: 1/3 to 2/3 of the initial dose, Q8H
Adults:
Initial: 300 to 450 mg/24 hr PO div. Q8H
Maintenance: 100 to 150 mg/24 hr PO div. Q8H

Anti-thyroid agent.

Comments
Propylthiouracil is no longer recommended as first line therapy because of hepatic and renal toxicity.
Begin maintenance when patient is euthyroid (usually after 2 months).
Adjust dose to achieve T3, FT4, and TSH serum levels in the normal range.
