Dosages
Children: 15 mg/kg/dose PO QID.
>12 years and Adults: 1 g PO QID.
>12 years and Adults: 1 g PO QID.
Topical:
Apply to gastrostomy site Q4-6H as required to maintain a visible layer.
Mechanism of Action
Thought to form ulcer-adherent complex at gastrointestinal ulcer site; forms viscous, adhesive barrier on surface of intact mucosa of stomach and duodenem.

ointment (BCCH): sucralfate 3% in Desitin (zinc oxide)

Comments
Give doses 1 hr before meals and at bedtime on an empty stomach.
Sucralfate contains aluminum, which may accumulate in patients with renal impairment.
Sucralfate decreases absorption of phenytoin, digoxin, theophylline, fat-soluble vitamins, omeprazole, ketaconazole, quinolones, and oral anticoagulants. Administer these drugs at least 2 hr before or after sucralfate.
Not recommended as independent treatment of severe symptoms of GERD or erosive esophagitis in children.
