Standard Prescription

beclomethasone {MDI}{Nasal Spray} __mcg ___(frequency)

Dosages

Metered Dose Inhaler (MDI):

Low dose: 50-100 mcg/dose inhaled BID

Medium dose: >100-200 mcg/dose inhaled BID

High dose: >200-400 mcg/dose inhaled BID

Nasal Spray:
>6 yrs: 2 sprays each nostril BID

Mechanism of Action

Inhaled corticosteroid

HFA Inhaler (MDI): 50 mcg/puff 100 mcg/puff

Nasal spray:
50 mcg/spray

Comments

Inhaler:

Use with valved holding chamber (e.g. Aerochamber) recommended.

Significant improvements may be seen within 4-7 days.

Dose depends upon severity and response. Titrate to lowest effective dose.

High dose may be associated with significant side effects - refer to asthma specialists.

Side effects: dysphonia and oral thrush. Rinse mouth after inhalation.

100 mcg ciclesonide= 125 mcg fluticasone = 100 mcg beclomethasone dipropionate = 200 mcg budesonide

Health Canada approved age of use is > 5 years old.

Nasal Spray:

May take up to 2 weeks of regular use before full benefit of medication is known

May cause transient epistaxis and nasal irritation. Taste and smell alteration also reported.
