Standard Prescription

cefixime __mg PO Q__H (__mg/kg/24hr)

Dosages

Children: 
8 mg/kg/dose PO given once daily or divided Q12H
Max 400 mg/day

Adults:  
400 mg PO daily or divided BID

Mechanism of Action

Third generation cephalosporin antibiotic

Forms Supplied

Tablet: 400 mg

Oral liquid: 20 mg/mL

Comments

Incidence of diarrhea is up to 15% in children.

Once daily dosing is recommended for treatment of UTI.

Modify dose in renal failure.
