cholestyramine __g resin PO__(frequency) (__mg resin/kg/24hr)
Dosages
Children: 80 mg resin/kg/dose PO TID up to 8 g/24 hr
Adults: Initial dose: 4 g resin/dose once dailyQID;
may be given up to 6 times per day to a maximum 24 g/24 hr for hypercholesterolemia or 16 g/24 hr for pruritis secondary to cholestasis
Mechanism of Action
Bile acid sequestrant

powder: each 9 g of powder contains 4 g of anhydrous resin
Comments
Mix with 60-180mL of water, juice or milk before meals.
Use with caution in young children.
Due to its anion exchange properties, it may cause hyperchloremic acidosis; follow electrolytes, especially bicarbonate.
May also cause constipation,decreased absorption of fat soluble vitamins and altered absorption of other drugs. Take other drugs 1 hour before or 4-6 hours after cholestyramine.
