Dosages

Children:
< 50 kg: 0.5-1 mmol/kg/dose PO BID-QID
(dose range: 2-5 mmol/kg/day)
> 50 kg: 0.5-1 mmol/kg/dose PO daily-BID

Adults:
0.5-1 g PO BID-QID
Maximum: 4.8 grams/day

Solution (BCCH): 4 mmol/mL (BCCH)
capsule: 1 g

Comments

May be added to feeds (usually 2-4 mmol per 100 mL of feeds).

1 gram sodium chloride = 393.3 mg elemental sodium = 17.1 mEq sodium = 17.1 mmol sodium.

Higher doses of enteral sodium may be required to ensure adequate growth in patients with short bowel syndrome and children with chronic kidney disease and renal dysplasia.
