Standard Prescription

cefotaxime__mg IV Q   H (    mg/kg/24hr)

Dosages

Infants and Children: 35-70 mg/kg/dose IM/IV Q8H

Severe Infections: 50 mg/kg/dose IM/IV Q6H .

Meningitis: 75 mg/kg/dose IM/IV Q6H (300 mg/kg/24 hr IV div. Q4-Q6H).

Maximum: 2000 mg IV Q4H

Adults: Usual dose 1-2 g IM/IV Q6-8H. Maximum: 2 g IV Q4H

Mechanism of Action

Third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic

Injection: 1 g, 2 g

Comments

Dosage adjustment is required in severe renal impairment.

Third generation cephalosporin with similar spectrum of activity to ceftriaxone.

Cefotaxime is preferred over ceftriaxone in the neonatal population (see ceftriaxone dosing monograph).
