Dosages

Children 6-11 years:
2 mg PO Q4-6H (max: 12 mg/24 hr)

Children ≥12 years:
4 mg PO Q4-6H (max: 24 mg/24 hr)

Mechanism of Action

First generation antihistamine, potent inverse agonist of the histamine H1 receptor

Comments

Health Canada does not recommend use in children under 6 years old.

May cause excitation in young children.

Use with caution in asthma.

May cause dose-related CNS and anticholinergic effects (sedation, dry mouth, blurred vision, urinary retention, and disturbed coordination).
